New requirements for 2-speed and multi-speed pool pumps: Starting in 2008 all new and replacement pool filtration pumps must be multiple speed if they are 1.0 total HP or more and must have a controller capable of operating them at more than one speed.
For info on these requirements go to California Energy Commision web site.
For a clarification of all this here is a text of a seminar on the subject. Go to SPEC web site.
For many years now pool builders have tended to install oversized pumps. In many cases a new 1/2 hp (0.95 total hp) pump will provide all the circulation necessary. This won't work if you have a single pump pool-spa combination. In these cases the pump was sized for the jets rather than the circulation so a 2-speed or multi-speed pump is necessary and will result in significant electricity savings.
I have found that many people have the mistaken belief that they need a pump capable of producing high pressure. Actually you want high flow. High pressure means the pump is oversized for the system and is costing you too much to run. Eventually I will have more info about this here. If I get any good e-mail questions I will post them here.
More will be added later.
